About the position
The Medical Lab Scientist / Medical Technologist - Blood Bank position at Summa Health System involves performing a variety of laboratory procedures under supervision. The role requires following procedures and instructions as outlined in procedure manuals, utilizing standard and specialized techniques, instrumentation, and equipment on a wide variety of biological specimens. This is essential for assisting physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. The position demands exercising professional judgment to recognize, prioritize, and facilitate varying test requests and workload efficiently. The individual will also perform duties defined under the CLIA role of Technical Consultant, Technical Supervisor, and General Supervisor if delegated.
Responsibilities
- Perform laboratory procedures under supervision following established protocols.
- Utilize standard and specialized techniques and equipment on biological specimens.
- Assist physicians in diagnosing and treating patients through laboratory results.
- Exercise professional judgment in prioritizing test requests and managing workload.
- Perform duties as defined under CLIA roles if delegated.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, Chemistry, Medical Laboratory Science, or Clinical Laboratory Science.
- Completion of 60 semester hours from an accredited institution, including specific coursework in medical laboratory technology or science courses.
- One year of experience in an approved program or equivalent with an accredited agency.
- Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Lab Scientist (MLS), or categorical certification in the area of experience from ASCP or AMT.
- Registry eligible staff must obtain certification within 15 months of hire.
Nice-to-haves
- Ability to read and comprehend detailed laboratory procedures and protocols.
- Experience with computer applications used in the laboratory.
- Completion of 12 continuing education credits each calendar year.
