About the position

The position involves performing a variety of specialized, routine, and non-routine tests, procedures, and examinations in various areas of laboratory work, including chemistry, hematology, microbiology, molecular, urinalysis, and immunohematology. These tests are essential for use by physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. The role requires a strong understanding of laboratory operations and the ability to work with complex instrumentation and testing procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Perform waived, moderately complex, and highly complex testing as defined by CLIA.
  • Conduct chemical, bacteriological, serological, or microscopic laboratory test procedures on specimens in one or more laboratory sections.
  • Perform tests requiring routine and/or complex instrumentation of various technologies.
  • Monitor quality control procedures and report results to ensure consistency and accuracy.
  • Calibrate, standardize, and maintain equipment following established procedures.
  • Perform troubleshooting techniques on instruments and recognize instrument malfunctions and abnormal test results, taking corrective action as needed.
  • Prepare reagents, standards, and controls according to prescribed procedures.
  • Validate, review, and report results of tests performed.
  • Assist higher-level technical staff with the instruction and teaching of laboratory procedures and tests.
  • Participate in ordering activities for supplies, materials, and equipment as needed.
  • Dispose of or properly handle biological, radioactive, and/or hazardous waste in accordance with laboratory, local, state, or federal regulations.
  • Review and evaluate literature for new testing and techniques.
  • Interpret laboratory results and discuss results with Pathologist, laboratory staff, and other clinical staff.
  • Suggest additional tests based on results obtained.

Requirements

  • Associates Degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory Technology (or graduation within 3 months of employment) required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, medical laboratory science, clinical laboratory science, or chemical, physical, or biological science (or graduation within 3 months of employment) required.
  • Completion of educational and certification/licensure requirements that meet CLIA/CAP requirements for the performance of high complexity testing.
  • 1 year of laboratory experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of laboratory operations and familiarity with laboratory departments, functions, and processes.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • PC word processing and spreadsheet skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • MLT(ASCP), MT(ASCP) or MLS(ASCP) certification or equivalent preferred.
