About the position

The position involves performing all manual and automated patient testing in Bacteriology, Mycology, Mycobacteriology, and Molecular Biology according to established policies. The technician is responsible for reporting accurate patient results using the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and/or manual processes, notifying appropriate caregivers of critical results, and providing necessary documentation. Quality control testing is a key responsibility, ensuring accurate results and taking corrective action when results exceed parameters. The technician participates in required proficiency testing according to accreditation standards and ensures appropriate documentation for all quality control, quality assurance, and maintenance records, both electronic and manual. Initial orientation and training requirements must be completed, and documented competency must be maintained as required. Instrument maintenance is performed according to departmental schedules, and all departmental reagents and supplies must be utilized efficiently, with notifications to supervisors when inventory levels are low.

Responsibilities

  • Performs quality control testing; ensures accurate results and takes corrective action when results exceed parameters.
  • Participates in required proficiency testing according to accreditation standards.
  • Ensures appropriate and complete documentation for all quality control, quality assurance, and maintenance records (electronic and manual).
  • Completes initial orientation and training requirements and maintains documented competency as required.
  • Performs instrument maintenance according to departmental schedule.
  • Utilizes all departmental reagents and supplies in an appropriate and efficient manner; notifies supervisor when supply inventory is at or below par levels.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or Chemical, Biological, or Physical Science required.
  • 18 months of hospital laboratory experience required with six of the months in full-time equivalent general Medical technology position within a Valley Health facility.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or Chemical, Biological, or Physical Science preferred.
  • ASCP or equivalent board certification preferred.
