About the position

The Medical Technologist performs various routine or special chemical, microscopic, and bacteriologic laboratory tests. The duties may be specific to a particular area of the laboratory, such as chemistry, hematology, microbiology, or the blood bank. Quality is paramount in all aspects of daily functions and work processes, including specimen preparation, assaying, interpretation, and results reporting in compliance with established policies and procedures. The role requires a commitment to maintaining high standards in the delivery of quality health care services and involves establishing cooperative relationships with patients, physicians, pathologists, staff, and other individuals.

Responsibilities

  • Performs an acceptable productivity level without a significant error rate on a variety of medical technology procedures.
  • Demonstrates initiative in adapting to changes or unusual circumstances in a way that promotes cooperation and minimizes disruption.
  • Assists in care and maintenance of laboratory work area and furnishings/equipment.
  • Coordinates, plans, and utilizes time efficiently to prioritize and organize duties while remaining flexible to meet laboratory needs.
  • Maintains an inventory of supplies in work areas to ensure efficient departmental operations and avoid duplication of energy and services.
  • Performs quality control and instrument check procedures, and maintains accurate and complete records of daily activities.
  • Combines ethical judgment with technical skill within policy and legal guidelines in decision making processes.
  • Observes and adheres to all departmental and hospital policies and procedures, and follows all safety, quality assurance, and infection control standards.
  • Exhibits a professional manner, appearance, and performance in job-related duties.
  • Performs all patient care duties in a manner that demonstrates a humanistic attitude for the physical and psychological needs of patients.
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with patients, physicians, pathologists, staff, and other individuals.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or requested.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field.
  • One year training in a NAACLS approved MT/CLS program.
  • Licensed in Louisiana as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist-Generalist (CLS-G) or Clinical Laboratory Scientist - Specialist (CLS-S) with Registry in applicable specialty.
