About the position

The Medical Technologist (Team Leader) at the Department of Veterans Affairs is responsible for overseeing laboratory team operations, ensuring compliance with policies and procedures, and providing technical guidance to staff. This role involves managing laboratory functions, facilitating team processes, and serving as a subject matter expert in complex testing scenarios. The Team Leader also plays a crucial role in training staff, maintaining quality control, and developing laboratory policies.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee laboratory team operations and ensure compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Provide technical advice and consultation to staff and healthcare members.
  • Facilitate team processes by coordinating tasks and goals with laboratory management.
  • Develop and review laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Attend vendor training for complex analytical instruments and train employees in their operation.
  • Assist in defining reference values and maintaining quality control protocols.
  • Perform complex maintenance procedures and troubleshoot instrument issues.
  • Coordinate laboratory proficiency testing programs.
  • Assist in new employee orientation and training, including competency evaluations.
  • Evaluate testing methods for compliance with established protocols.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science or related field from an accredited institution.
  • Completion of a medical technology clinical practice program accredited by recognized agencies.
  • Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) by relevant certifying bodies.
  • One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in a related position.

  • Experience with large-scale automated analytical instruments.
