About the position

The Medical Technologist position in the Laboratory department at Southwest Louisiana Hospital Association involves performing quality control studies to ensure the accuracy of clinical data. The role includes conducting various analyses of body fluids, such as blood and urine, to determine the presence of normal and abnormal components. The Medical Laboratory Scientist will also be responsible for maintaining laboratory instruments, training and supervising students, and ensuring compliance with established guidelines for reporting critical results.

Responsibilities

  • Perform quality control studies to ensure accuracy of clinical data.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance on assigned instruments and equipment according to established schedule and procedure.
  • Verify instrument functioning by checking and calibrating specific lab instruments and documenting data.
  • Record on instrument logs any repairs, replacement, and maintenance needed of equipment.
  • Conduct chemical, hematological, microbiological, immunological, serological, and immunohematological analyses of body fluids.
  • Analyze test results and enter findings in computer.
  • Train and supervise students.
  • Perform duties according to age specific needs of patients.
  • Perform troubleshooting as necessary.
  • Call critical results within established guidelines.
  • Notify Pathologist and Section leader of any unusual or unexpected findings.
  • Meet established turnaround times.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science or Equivalent.
  • Any suitable combination of education, training or experience accepted.
  • Louisiana State License as CLS-Generalist.
  • Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) Certificate from ASCP or equivalent.
