About the position

The Medical Underwriter Trainee/Underwriter position at Allied World Assurance Company involves critically evaluating the operations of healthcare organizations, their litigation experiences, and their commitment to clinical risk management strategies in delivering medical services to patient populations. The role requires the use of various underwriting tools, including models, actuarial services, and collaboration with claims and risk management colleagues to assess risk appetite, pricing, and coverage offerings while ensuring that projected premium and profitability goals are met. Compliance with divisional and corporate underwriting guidelines, administrative standards, and time service standards is essential for success in this role. The responsibilities of the Medical Underwriter include performing general underwriting functions such as reviewing submissions, conducting pricing analyses, setting terms and conditions, and authorizing quotes, binders, and invoices. The underwriter will work within their authority and seek necessary approvals from the regional manager. Additionally, the role involves liaising with the Claims Department regarding specific claims activities and overall market claims concerns that could impact profitability. The underwriter will also conduct marketing meetings with brokers as directed by the regional manager and attend client and broker meetings, lunches, dinners, and other social events as applicable. Staying current with major industry issues and developments is crucial, and the underwriter will be expected to provide specific reports as needed by senior staff. Other duties may be assigned as necessary, making adaptability and a willingness to learn key attributes for this position.

Responsibilities

  • Critically evaluate health care organizations' operations and litigation experience.

  • Attend client/broker meetings and social outings as applicable.
  • Stay current with major industry issues and developments.
  • Provide specific reports as needed by senior staff.

Requirements

  • Solid writing and communication skills.
  • 1-4 years of underwriting experience preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to change tasks quickly.
  • Ability to work independently and in a group setting.
  • Willingness to travel.
  • Working understanding of Microsoft Excel or ability to learn quickly.
