About the position

The City of Columbia is seeking a dedicated Meter Reader I to join our Utilities Department. This full-time position plays a crucial role in ensuring accurate and efficient readings of water and electric meters across assigned routes. The Meter Reader will be responsible for maintaining meter equipment, access, and location data, which directly contributes to the City's operational excellence and customer satisfaction. The successful candidate will work primarily outdoors, engaging with the community and ensuring that utility services are delivered accurately and efficiently. In this role, you will conduct water and electric meter readings on designated routes, communicate with customers regarding meter access or potential issues, and collaborate with property managers to ensure seamless access to meters. You will also assist Utility Service Workers by resolving billing concerns and performing audit re-readings. Inspecting meters and connections for irregularities, malfunctions, tampering, or unauthorized connections is a key responsibility, as is collecting GPS data for meter locations and maintaining accurate records. Additionally, you will submit work orders for any meter servicing needs and respond to public inquiries and complaints in a timely and professional manner. The position requires regular attendance to maintain operational efficiency and offers a starting salary of $15.00 to $18.45 per hour, commensurate with training and experience. The work schedule is Monday to Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and the deadline to apply is open until filled, with a preferred application date of March 4, 2024.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver's license required.

  • Ability to walk long distances (up to 15 miles per day) and work in various weather conditions.
  • Strong customer service skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and operate handheld computers and meters.
