About the position

The Hanover is seeking a Middle Market Sales Underwriting Specialist to join our team in Pennsylvania. This full-time, exempt role is a hybrid position that requires a blend of technical underwriting skills, sales acumen, and customer advocacy. The successful candidate will be responsible for identifying, soliciting, underwriting, and selling new and renewal Middle Market accounts that align with our industry segments and appetite goals. This role is crucial for driving profitable growth and requires a thorough understanding of Hanover's strategies and appetites. The specialist will utilize internal and external data to make informed risk decisions and will operate within a broad Letter of Authority for all underwriting decisions, managing a complex portfolio with limited direction. In this position, the specialist will apply advanced underwriting concepts, including risk selection, exposure and hazard identification, and loss analysis. They will use various underwriting tools to ensure compliance with guidelines and will have advanced knowledge of pricing components and rating methodologies. The role also involves managing an assigned portfolio to achieve key metrics such as gross written premium, profitability, and retention rates. The specialist will analyze market trends and prepare information on underwriting decisions to drive results within their territory. Sales acumen is essential, as the specialist will identify and close accounts aligned with the branch strategy, build relationships with agents, and enhance agency economics. They will engage with customers at a high level, making sales presentations and utilizing industry solutions to augment the sales process. The role requires a proactive approach to territory business plans, ensuring a substantial pipeline for future growth while effectively managing relationships with agents and customers.

Responsibilities

  • Identify, solicit, underwrite, and sell new and renewal Middle Market accounts.
  • Apply advanced underwriting concepts including risk selection and loss analysis.
  • Utilize underwriting tools to ensure compliance with guidelines.
  • Manage assigned portfolio to achieve gross written premium and profitability goals.
  • Analyze market factors and trends affecting pricing and profitability.
  • Prepare information on underwriting decisions and rate appeals to drive results.
  • Build and maintain relationships with agents to enhance business opportunities.
  • Make sales presentations to agents and customers on complex accounts.
  • Implement territory business plans and monitor performance for future growth.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience.
  • 3-7+ years of underwriting experience, with a minimum of 3 years underwriting Middle Market accounts.
  • 3+ years of experience driving agency relationships resulting in profitable new and renewal business.
  • Ability to profile assigned agency plant and strategically market capabilities.
