About the position

The Middle School Special Education Teacher is a state-certified educator responsible for delivering specific course content in an online environment tailored to meet the needs of students with disabilities. This role requires the teacher to provide instruction, support, and guidance while managing the learning process in accordance with each student's Individualized Education Program (IEP). The teacher will actively engage with students and their families to promote learning and ensure compliance with all necessary documentation related to special education services. In this position, the teacher will be responsible for developing compliant IEPs, progress reports, and other state-specific documentation. They will facilitate collaborative meetings, including annual IEP meetings, and ensure that students receive appropriate therapies by communicating effectively with parents and related service staff. The teacher will also utilize provided resources to implement accommodations and modifications for students with disabilities, ensuring their inclusion and success in the general education classroom. The role demands a commitment to personalizing learning experiences for all students, demonstrating high expectations for student success, and maintaining a positive rapport with families. The teacher will collect data to monitor student progress, document all interactions with parents and students, and prepare students for high-stakes standardized tests. This position requires the ability to work independently, typically 40+ hours per week, and maintain a professional home office environment. The teacher will also be expected to travel up to 20% of the time for professional development, student testing, and other school-related activities. This full-time position is integral to the mission of Pine Springs Preparatory Virtual Academy, which aims to provide an exemplary individualized educational experience for students through strong school and community partnerships.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver specific course content in an online environment for middle school students with special needs.
  • Provide instruction, support, and guidance tailored to each student's Individualized Education Program (IEP).
  • Communicate with parents and related service staff to ensure appropriate therapies are provided to students with special needs.
  • Develop compliant IEPs, progress reports, and other required special education documentation.
  • Facilitate and lead collaborative special education meetings, including annual IEP meetings.
  • Utilize resources to ensure accommodations and modifications for students with disabilities, including assistive technology and accessible text.
  • Modify and accommodate lessons and assessments as specified by the IEP.
  • Ensure the inclusion and success of students in the general education classroom.
  • Collect data and work samples to monitor student progress towards IEP goals and objectives.
  • Document all contact with parents and interventions with students.
  • Analyze student data to prescribe remediation and enrichment as needed.
  • Provide engaging synchronous and asynchronous learning experiences for students.
  • Maintain a grade book ensuring academic integrity and alert administrators to concerns about student performance.
  • Prepare students for high-stakes standardized tests.
  • Establish and maintain positive rapport with families, communicating regularly and responding in a timely manner.
  • Support learning coaches/parents with curricular and instructional issues in a virtual classroom environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in education or a related field.
  • Active state teaching license in North Carolina.
  • Ability to clear required background check.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other teachers to interpret and produce representations of student data.
  • Receptive to receiving coaching on a regular basis from administrators.
  • Ability to embrace change and adapt to ensure excellent student outcomes.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
