About The Position

Are you looking for a position where you get to help students learn and grow? Are you interested in working with military-affiliated individuals in higher education? If so, The Dean of Students Office with Iowa State University is seeking applicants for a Military-Affiliated Student Center Director! This position will be classified as an Assistant Director Student Services. The Military-Affiliated Student Center (MASC) provides academic support, transition assistance, and advocacy for students who are Active-Duty Service Members, Veterans, ROTC cadets, Reservists, National Guard, and their Families. Our center is dedicated to creating a supportive environment that recognizes and values the unique experiences and needs of military-affiliated students.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and 5 years of related experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in student affairs in a higher education environment.
  • Military and/or military-affiliated experience.
  • Master's degree in Student Affairs, Counseling, Education, or Leadership-related field.
  • Background in developmental programs and services, such as developing curriculum, workshops, trainings, etc.
  • Experience building relationships with military-related organizations and/or organizations focused on career opportunities.
  • Experience supervising/leading individuals or teams.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and coordinate a comprehensive co-curricular plan that supports the leadership, academic, professional, and personal growth of Military-Affiliated Students.
  • Collaborate with campus partners to design policies and programs that enhance college access and encourage the retention and success of military-affiliated students.
  • Monitor and inform the campus community on trends, legislation, and changes that may impact military-affiliated students, helping to shape effective support strategies.
  • Work closely with departments within the Dean of Students office to provide holistic support to military-affiliated students across campus.
  • Partner with academic colleges and student support programs to share best practices and ensure coordinated, effective strategies for student persistence and retention.
  • Stay updated on student development and best practices by engaging with professionals in the field and attending industry events.
  • Hire, train, and manage both professional and student staff within the Military-Affiliated Student Center to ensure the smooth operation of services and programs.
  • Oversee military-affiliated scholarships, award programs, and celebratory events, ensuring recognition and support for deserving students.
  • Manage the department's budget, ensuring compliance with university policies and regulations. Prepare annual budget requests and forecast expenditures for all programs and services.
  • Administer and report on the use of grant funds, ensuring they align with community partner expectations, while identifying new opportunities and writing proposals for funding.
  • Enhance the visibility and reputation of the Military-Affiliated Student Center through strategic networking with alumni, community partners, and potential donors. Lead fundraising efforts to support the Center's mission.
  • Build strong relationships with veteran-serving organizations, resource groups, and committees to benefit military-affiliated students at ISU.
  • Develop and lead training sessions for faculty and staff on best practices for supporting military and veteran students.
  • Provide one-on-one advisement to students, offering guidance on their individual needs and connecting them with university and community resources.
  • Work alongside various university departments and community organizations to ensure students receive comprehensive support and referrals when necessary.
