About the position

The Mission Advancement Advisor at the American Heart Association is a key role focused on fundraising efforts, particularly in securing donations of $100,000 or more. This position involves cultivating relationships with donors, developing strategies for engagement, and collaborating with market staff to enhance fundraising initiatives. The Advisor will work towards meeting a personal fundraising goal of $1 million annually, while also providing leadership and expertise in charitable estate planning and major giving strategies.

Responsibilities

  • Secure donations of $100,000 or more while moving donors to their highest level of engagement with the mission.
  • Cultivate relationships and solicit support from current and past American Heart Association donors.
  • Identify, cultivate, and solicit an assigned portfolio of prospective donors.
  • Complete a minimum of 100 face-to-face donor visits each fiscal year.
  • Make at least 24 qualified asks for six-figure gifts annually.
  • Build and implement individual strategies for donors and prospects in portfolio.
  • Work with Mission Advancement operations team to secure project information and build proposals.
  • Meet personal fundraising goal of $1M annually through various giving mechanisms.
  • Collaborate with Field Directors on strategies to identify and solicit major gift prospects.
  • Serve as a resource and leader in building staff capabilities and redefining donor relationships.
  • Leverage strategic events to cultivate donor relationships.
  • Ensure timely documentation of plans and interactions in the CRM database.
  • Report activity, trends, and results to internal audiences on a monthly basis.
  • Participate in training activities and develop programs to advance Major and Planned Gifts.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in fundraising or sales, with at least one year focused on major gifts or large accounts.
  • Experience in identifying and developing major giving opportunities that align with organizational mission.
  • Minimum of two years of experience working with complex donors representing $100,000 or more in revenue.
  • Collaborative skills with all levels of staff, prospects, volunteers, and donors.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to travel overnight approximately 10% of the time and an additional 60% local travel.

Nice-to-haves

  • Minimum of three years knowledge of the philanthropic landscape.
  • Minimum of two years of experience using donor relationship management software, such as BBCRM Blackbaud, Dynamics, or Raiser's Edge.
