About the position

The Motor Equipment Operator position is a vital role within the City of Springfield, MA, responsible for the maintenance and repair of parks maintenance equipment. This position operates under the supervision of the Foreman and does not involve supervising other employees. The primary focus of this role is to ensure that all gasoline and diesel-powered motors are maintained in optimal working condition, which includes a variety of tasks such as testing, overhauling, and repairing engines and related components. The operator will be tasked with a range of mechanical duties, including but not limited to, facing, grinding, and seating valves, setting tappets and rods, cleaning and installing rings and inserts, and replacing pistons and bearings. Additionally, the role requires the operator to repair, adjust, and replace various parts of the equipment, such as brakes, transmissions, rear ends, differentials, clutches, axles, cooling systems, shock absorbers, steering boxes, and more. The operator will also be responsible for ordering necessary parts and picking them up as needed, ensuring that all equipment is functioning safely and efficiently. This position requires a considerable knowledge of the standard practices, materials, tools, and techniques of the trade, as well as the operating principles of both diesel and gas-powered internal combustion engines. The ability to diagnose and correct defects and malfunctions is essential, along with the skill to follow written and oral instructions accurately. The role is crucial for maintaining the operational integrity of the parks maintenance equipment, contributing to the overall maintenance and beautification of the city’s parks.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains, tests, and overhauls gasoline and diesel-powered motors.
  • Faces, grinds, and seats valves.
  • Sets tappets and rods.
  • Cleans, installs rings and inserts.
  • Replaces pistons and bearings.
  • Repairs, adjusts, and replaces brakes, transmission, rear ends, differentials, clutches, axles, cooling systems, shock absorbers, steering boxes, posts, tie rod ends, gears, shafts, cams, drag links, king pins, bushings, and bearings.
  • Orders needed parts and picks them up.
  • Performs related work as required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years of related experience.
  • Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, materials, tools, equipment, and techniques of the trade.
  • Considerable knowledge of the operating principles of both diesel and gas-powered internal combustion engines.
  • Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Ability to locate, diagnose, and correct defects and malfunctions of a variety of engines and related equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Skill in the use and care of tools, equipment, and materials of the trade.
