About the position

The Motor Vehicle Operator at Stony Brook Medicine is responsible for transporting residents of the Long Island State Veterans Home to appointments and trips, ensuring their safety and comfort during transit. This role also includes assisting with deliveries and performing transporter-related duties within the facility. The position requires a strong commitment to the care of elderly residents and involves routine vehicle maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Drive ambulatory and wheelchair geriatric residents to and from appointments and trips, approximately 75% of the time.
  • Load and unload wheelchairs and physically transfer adult residents in and out of wheelchairs as trained.
  • Wait and stay with residents at clinical appointments, providing comfort and safeguarding their belongings.
  • Perform transporter-related duties, taking residents from their rooms to appointments within the facility and back, assisting with wheelchair transfers as assigned.
  • Make deliveries or pick up supplies from vendors and the post office, and drive staff as needed.
  • Move or carry cargo onto, into, and out of vehicles.
  • Assist laborers in the delivery of supplies to nursing units.
  • Tend to routine maintenance of vehicles, including washing, changing tires, spark plugs, and oil.

Requirements

  • Possess a New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.
  • Have a driving record free from major violations.
  • Knowledge of Vehicle and Traffic Law as it applies to safe vehicle operation.
  • Knowledge of the nature of cargo carried and any special handling.
  • Knowledge of simple automotive repair and maintenance procedures.
  • Ability to operate motor vehicles as required.
  • Ability to lift and carry crates, cartons, boxes, and other cargo onto and off of transport vehicles.

Nice-to-haves

  • Possession of a NYS Commercial Drivers license with passenger endorsement for transport of 15 or more passengers.
