About the position

The Naval Engineering Manager will oversee resources and manage the Engineering Department's objectives related to new ship construction. This role requires significant travel, with an initial period of 2 to 3 weeks onsite in Wisconsin followed by remote work for 1 week. The manager will collaborate with other engineering staff and project managers to ensure project goals are met and will be responsible for defining contract requirements and managing departmental capabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Manage all resources associated with the Engineering Department's goals and objectives related to new ship construction.
  • Assist other engineering staff managers in defining contract requirements for ship design and build projects.
  • Define department resources needed to meet commitments and coordinate personnel to achieve these commitments.
  • Interface with project engineers and project managers to maintain project goals and objectives.
  • Assume high-level roles within the department, including bid and proposal development.
  • Establish resource requirements and manage them as needed.
  • Develop and maintain departmental capabilities and objectives related to engineering efforts.
  • Create and refresh training regimens to enhance departmental skills.
  • Conduct standard process updates and reviews for departmental enhancements.
  • Mentor project leaders to enhance individual capabilities and enforce departmental processes.
  • Report department performance to the Director of Engineering.
  • Establish and maintain overhead budgets for the department's operation.
  • Develop and take ownership of project-related engineering department budgets during the bid and estimating process.
  • Create, review, and refresh parametric requirements for estimating engineering department costs.
  • Validate estimates and participate in the development of bids and proposals.
  • Interface with suppliers and assigned engineering staff.
  • Add subcontractors as required to support efforts.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 10 years of shipyard experience focused on engineering and production, or 15 years of similar experience in shipbuilding.
  • Experience managing technical teams in engineering and production with a successful track record of completing work within budget and schedule.
  • Familiarity with classification organizations and maritime rule sets, both foreign and domestic.

Nice-to-haves

  • Defense and commercial shipbuilding experience.
