About the position

Baystate Health, a nationally recognized leader in healthcare quality and safety, is seeking a dedicated Patient Care Technician (PCT) to join our team in the Neurosciences department at Baystate Medical Center. This full-time position requires working the night shift from 7 PM to 7 AM, with a commitment to rotating weekends and holidays. The PCT will be responsible for providing comprehensive care to patients with complex neurological and neurosurgical conditions, including stroke, epilepsy, brain injury, and spinal injuries. The role involves performing a variety of technical tasks and bedside functions under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN). The PCT will engage in direct patient care activities, which include hygiene assistance, skin care, mobility support, and monitoring of vital signs. The technician will also be responsible for managing equipment and assisting in various procedures, including phlebotomy and EKGs. The position requires a compassionate caregiver who can effectively communicate with patients and their families, ensuring that care is delivered in a respectful and informative manner. In addition to patient care, the PCT will document treatments and activities, monitor patients' conditions during treatments, and communicate any significant changes to the nursing staff. The incumbent will also be knowledgeable about emergency procedures and maintain patient safety at all times. This role is essential in providing high-quality care and support to patients and their families during their hospital stay.

Responsibilities

  • Provides age-appropriate care to patients, demonstrating knowledge of developmental stages.
  • Monitors basic physiological parameters, takes and records routine vital signs, and reports significant deviations.
  • Administers treatments and procedures per BMC policy/procedure, including changing dressings and providing post-mortem care.
  • Assists patients with the elimination of body wastes and accurately measures and records intake and output.
  • Performs Point of Care (POC) Testing and assists in the delivery of ancillary services as directed.
  • Communicates effectively with team and patients, recognizing culturally based needs.
  • Initiates emergency procedures and maintains patient safety at all times.
  • Functions as a member of the team, assisting with both clinical and non-clinical activities.
  • Demonstrates competency for one-to-one observation of patients based on department needs.

Requirements

  • At least one year of patient care experience in long-term care, specialty, or acute care settings.
  • CPR Certification from the American Heart Association.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
  • High school diploma or GED.

Nice-to-haves

  • CNA license or PCT training preferred.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to maintain professional composure in high-stress situations.
