About the position

The Nurse Manager for the Med/Surg/Tele/Stroke unit at The Good Samaritan Hospital is responsible for overseeing the daily operations and work activities of the nursing staff within the 32-bed Step Down Intermediate Care Unit. This unit primarily serves adult and geriatric patients with cardiac diseases and stroke, accommodating acute cardiac events that require continuous intravenous medication drips, as well as pre and post-operative care for electrophysiology studies, cardiac catheterizations, and pacemaker/automated implantable cardiac defibrillator (AICD) procedures. The Nurse Manager will ensure that all registered nurses on the unit are certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Stroke Certification, and will work closely with the CHF Program Coordinator and Stroke Program Coordinator to provide high-quality education to patients. In this role, the Nurse Manager will recommend staffing levels based on professional guidelines, ensuring an adequate mix of competent personnel for all shifts. They will develop and implement nursing standards and practices, maintain established policies and procedures, and ensure compliance with National Patient Safety goals and state regulations. The Nurse Manager will identify patient needs and develop quality programs to meet those needs, using outcomes data to direct quality improvement initiatives. They will also monitor high-risk cases, advocate for staff education on patient confidentiality, and promote culturally congruent patient care. The Nurse Manager will act as a mentor to charge nurses and staff, fostering an empowered environment that encourages shared decision-making. They will consult with specialists as needed and adjust nursing care processes to ensure optimal patient care. The role includes interviewing applicants, evaluating staff performance, developing departmental budgets, and ensuring alignment with the system's strategic goals. The Nurse Manager will also participate in patient rounds, collaborate with other departments, and maintain a commitment to safety and quality improvement in patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Manage daily operations and work activities of nursing and support staff on the assigned unit.
  • Recommend staffing levels according to professional organizations' guidelines and ensure adequate staffing mix for all shifts.
  • Develop and implement nursing standards and practices based on research findings.
  • Identify patient needs and develop quality programs to meet those needs, using outcomes data for quality improvement.
  • Monitor high-risk and complicated cases to ensure appropriate nursing interventions are implemented.
  • Initiate personnel actions using a Just Culture model and System's Human Resources policies.
  • Ensure staff education on communication to protect patient confidentiality and advocate for social/professional equity among staff.
  • Act as a role model and mentor to charge nurses and staff, promoting shared decision-making.
  • Consult with specialists and adjust nursing care processes as needed for optimal patient care.
  • Interview applicants and evaluate staff performance, overseeing competency testing and orientation.
  • Develop and manage departmental budgets, monitoring variance against budget objectives.
  • Ensure unit strategic plan aligns with the System's nursing strategic plan and goals.
  • Coordinate services within the department and with other departments to enhance patient care.
  • Continuously assess and improve department performance and maintain quality control programs.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of growth and development principles for the assigned patient population.
  • Participate in safety education programs and root cause analyses as required.
  • Enhance professional growth through participation in educational programs and professional organizations.
  • Participate in patient rounds and ensure staff participation to optimize collaboration with medical staff.
  • Collaborate with departments to ensure proper maintenance of equipment and supplies.
  • Attend administrative meetings and participate in nursing committees.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing required.
  • 3 years of relevant nursing experience required.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Licensed Registered Nurse upon hire required.
  • Registered Nurse Multi-State License upon hire required.
  • Basic Life Support certification upon hire required.
  • Heartsaver CPR/AED certification upon hire required.
  • Board Certified Nurse Executive preferred.
