About the position

The Nursing Assistant and Unit Secretary position in the Cardiac ICU at York Hospital is a full-time role that requires a commitment of 36 hours per week, with shifts from 7 am to 7 pm. This position is critical in providing care to critically ill cardiac patients aged 18 and older, including those who are post-operative and require advanced medical support such as hemodynamic monitoring, ventilator management, and arrhythmia intervention. The Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) consists of 10 beds and is dedicated to delivering high-quality care to patients with complex cardiac conditions. As a Nursing Assistant and Unit Secretary, you will serve as a vital link between patients, families, and the healthcare team. Your responsibilities will include acting as a receptionist, managing communication, and ensuring that the medical records are accurately maintained. You will interact daily with patients, visitors, and healthcare professionals, demonstrating a positive and helpful attitude. Your role will also involve transcribing physician orders, scheduling patient care services, and providing clinical support to nursing staff by performing various patient care duties, such as taking vital signs and assisting with daily living activities. In addition to direct patient care, you will be responsible for maintaining the supply levels in the unit, ensuring that all necessary items are stocked and available. You will greet and assist visitors and staff, answer phone calls with professionalism, and manage electronic data entry and retrieval. Your ability to communicate effectively and maintain confidentiality will be essential in this role. You will also be tasked with monitoring patient conditions, reporting any changes to the appropriate personnel, and ensuring that all medical records are complete and accurate. This position requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and a commitment to providing outstanding service to all customers, fostering teamwork, and adhering to safety regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Provides general nursing care and personal care assistance to patients, including bathing, dressing, eating, changing bed linens and bed pans, and positioning.
  • Assists in the preparation and transportation of patients for tests and procedures.
  • Monitors patient condition levels and reports changes to the appropriate individuals.
  • Ensures patient rooms, nursing areas, and supply carts are stocked with appropriate items at required levels.
  • Maintains par levels of supplies and equipment on assigned unit(s) and notifies supervisor when reorder points are reached.
  • Greets, directs, and assists physicians, visitors, patients, and ancillary department staff.
  • Answers telephone inquiries and provides accurate information or forwards callers to appropriate resources.
  • Enters and retrieves data from established computer files using various applications designed for patient management.
  • Performs duties related to the creation and maintenance of the patient medical record, ensuring all necessary forms are included.
  • Transcribes orders and documents on the paper or electronic record, ensuring verbal orders are signed according to hospital policy.
  • Schedules tests, procedures, and other patient services, conferring with clinical care providers as appropriate.
  • Communicates changes in the patient's condition and other urgent information to the Registered Nurse in a timely manner.
  • Orders and stocks supplies on an ongoing basis.

Requirements

  • Certificate Program Post High School Vocational/Specialized Training is required.
  • Less than 1 year of relevant experience is required.
  • Basic Life Support certification upon hire is required.
  • Certified Nurse Aide certification upon hire is preferred.
  • Completion of a course for unit secretaries and medical terminology upon hire is preferred.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required.
  • Excellent computer skills and ability to use various software applications in a Windows environment are required.
