About the position

The Onsite Wastewater Specialist I or II position at Deschutes County is an entry-level or journey-level role responsible for ensuring compliance with environmental quality regulations related to onsite wastewater systems. The specialist will conduct inspections, complete technical reports, and enforce compliance with state, county, and federal regulations, contributing to the health and safety of the community.

Responsibilities

  • Independently inspects and monitors properties for compliance with environmental regulations.
  • Investigates violations of environmental regulations to protect public health and safety.
  • Performs technical functions to manage and verify compliance with environmental quality regulations and standards.
  • Enforces compliance with state, county, and federal regulations, policies, procedures, and safety standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Soil Science, Environmental Science, or related field with relevant coursework.
  • For Specialist I: One year of experience in business computers and customer service, or equivalent training and experience.
  • For Specialist II: Two years of experience in environmental health programs, or equivalent training and experience.
  • Knowledge of county policies and procedures, and applicable state and federal rules, codes, and regulations.
  • Skill in interpreting and applying health and safety standards and regulations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems (OWTS).
  • Ability to compile, review, and analyze technical data.
