About The Position

The Virginia Department of Transportation is looking for individuals driven by safety, service to community, and a commitment to excellence to join our team! As an Operator Maintenance, you will perform a combination of skilled equipment operations, preventive maintenance, and manual labor tasks in roadway maintenance. Operator Maintenance will respond to emergency roadway and severe weather events to prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous road conditions. You will attend work zone training, prepare work zones and perform traffic control, demonstrate proper work site protection techniques, participate as a working team member performing manual labor including clearing drainage, cutting brush, pot-hole patching, and fulfilling tasks required to complete road maintenance projects. Additionally, you will complete pre-trip inspections, perform preventive maintenance and operate power tools and light to heavy equipment. This position is the core of VDOT's emergency response requirement, therefore you will work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
  • Skill in the operation and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.
  • Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools.
  • Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter.
  • Safety shoes required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in emergency operations to include snow removal, storms and accident clean-up.
  • Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs.
  • A combination of training, experience, or education in Maintenance, Vehicle Operations or related field desired.
  • Experience in roadway maintenance and construction.
  • Valid Commercial Driver's License with appropriate endorsements.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to emergency roadway and severe weather events to prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous road conditions.
  • Attend work zone training, prepare work zones and perform traffic control.
  • Demonstrate proper work site protection techniques: identify workplace safety hazards, make suggestions for improvement, wear proper personal protection equipment, maintain current knowledge of safety rules, regulations, laws and use equipment properly and safely.
  • Participate as a working team member performing manual labor including clearing drainage, cutting brush, pot-hole patching, and fulfilling tasks required to complete road maintenance projects.
  • Complete pre-trip inspections, perform preventive maintenance and operate power tools and light to heavy equipment.
