About The Position

The University of Utah Health is seeking Ophthalmic Medical Technicians (OMT) and Certified Ophthalmic Assistants (COA) to join their patient-focused organization. This role involves performing preliminary examinations and evaluations of patients with ocular complaints, executing technical tests in ophthalmology, and providing essential patient education. Requirements

  • Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system (to be obtained within 30 days of hire).
  • For COA: Current JCAHPO certification as an Ophthalmic Assistant (COA).
  • Desire to work towards and obtain JCAHPO certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA).

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in an allied health profession position in ophthalmology.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain a medical history from each patient to assist in diagnosis.
  • Perform essential diagnostic tests such as visual acuity, pupil assessment, and color vision testing.
  • Administer topical ophthalmic medication as needed.
  • Instruct patients regarding testing procedures and treatment plans.
  • Report equipment malfunctions and ensure adequate inventory of supplies.
  • Make decisions on screening procedures based on patient symptoms.
  • Interpret test results and seek guidance for treatment procedures.
  • May perform basic manifest refractometry and function as a scribe for the ophthalmologist.
  • Assist in training other ophthalmic personnel and with laser procedures.
