About the position

The Optical Mechanical Engineer position at Gentex Corporation in Carbondale, PA, is focused on the conception, development, evaluation, and documentation of innovative design solutions for optical and mechanical components, as well as auxiliary equipment systems. The role involves planning and coordinating technical development activities related to optical components, providing engineering assistance throughout the development process, including prototype tooling, fabrication, testing, evaluation, and transitioning to production of optical systems. In this role, the engineer will design and develop individual components, sub-assemblies, and assemblies for optical, mechanical, or electro-optical devices, mechanisms, and composite structures. The engineer will conduct benchwork experiments, build prototypes, and characterize the optical and mechanical performances of these prototypes. Additionally, the engineer will contribute to scheduling and cost estimates for Gentex's technical activities related to assigned R&D projects, ensuring coordination with other engineering departments. The position requires working under minimal supervision, handling a variety of moderately complex to complex design assignments, and being responsible for the appropriate engineering review and approval of the engineering change process. The engineer will also prepare technical requirements for system development and product fabrication specifications, including component and end-item specifications. Furthermore, the engineer will direct efforts for the preparation of sketches and complete detail layout drawings for mechanical design documentation, providing direction and specifications to drafters. The role demands flexibility in scheduling to support critical deadlines and requires the engineer to provide data and background for technical reports, proposals, and presentations that document and communicate the results and status of project activities. The work environment is primarily climate-controlled, with occasional exposure to warehouse or manufacturing areas subject to temperature and noise changes.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop individual components, sub-assemblies, and assemblies for optical, mechanical, or electro-optical devices.
  • Conduct benchwork experiments, build prototypes, and characterize optical and mechanical performances of prototypes.
  • Contribute to schedule and cost estimates for Gentex technical activities for assigned R&D projects, coordinating with other engineering departments.
  • Work under minimal supervision, carrying out a variety of moderately complex to complex design assignments.
  • Be responsible for appropriate engineering review and approval of the engineering change process.
  • Prepare technical requirements for system development and product fabrication specifications, including component and end-item specifications.
