About the position

As an Optical Transport Network (OTN) Engineer at ByteDance, you will play a crucial role in the design, implementation, and maintenance of a wide-scale operational optical network that connects data centers and Points of Presence (POP) locations globally. This position is part of the Edge Networking team, which is responsible for creating innovative edge networking solutions that power popular applications like TikTok and Douyin, serving hundreds of millions of users worldwide. You will be tasked with ensuring high availability, scalability, and performance of the network infrastructure, which is essential for the seamless operation of our services. Your responsibilities will include high-level and low-level design, roadmap development, and standardization of ByteDance's OTN. You will also focus on OTN automation and architecture optimization, aiming to improve the availability and efficiency of the optical transport network. This role requires a proactive approach to troubleshooting various OTN issues and participating in an on-call schedule to address service-related problems. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure that the network infrastructure meets the evolving needs of our applications and users. Responsibilities

  • Implement, set up, and maintain a wide-scale operational optical network covering regional metropolitan areas.
  • Responsible for high level and low level design, road-map and standardisation of ByteDance's OTN.
  • Responsible for OTN automation and architecture optimisation.
  • Improve OTN availability and efficiency.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a closely related technical field, or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • 2 years hands-on experience with major OTN devices, such as Ciena, Nokia, Infinera, etc.
  • Knowledge of optical transportation, OTN solution, system design, architecture, service delivery, and operation.
  • Good troubleshooting skills to handle various OTN issues.
  • Ability to participate in an on-call schedule and serve as escalation points for service-related issues.
  • Network knowledge, such as TCP/IP and BGP, is preferred.
  • Self-motivated with good communication and written skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with the Optical layer (including Transponders and extensive optical networks) and/or the IP layer (encompassing TCP/IP, IPv6, along with one or more routing protocols like BGP, OSPF, ISIS, or equivalents).
  • Practical experience in the development, provisioning, or comprehension of network device configurations for a leading vendor like Ciena or Nokia.
