About the position

The Organ Referral Specialist is responsible for the management of organ referrals from referring hospitals, conducting donor chart reviews through electronic medical record (EMR) access, providing logistics support, facilitating organ allocation (specifically kidneys and pancreas), receiving organ import offers, and maintaining communication between the organ procurement team, hospitals, transplant centers, professional colleagues, and the public. This role is critical in ensuring that potential organ donors are evaluated and that the donation process is handled with sensitivity and professionalism. In the essential job functions, the Organ Referral Specialist will manage and document organ referral calls from hospitals to evaluate potential donors, answer questions, and develop action plans in collaboration with the Administrator on Call (AOC), Family Services Coordinator (FSC), and Organ Procurement Transplant Coordinator (OPTC). The role also involves logistical support for the transportation of organs and associated samples, screening potential donors with physician partners, and facilitating communications regarding organ and tissue suitability. The Organ Referral Specialist will coordinate the allocation of kidneys and pancreas, manage the import of organs from outside the service area, and assist in the management of kidney preservation pumps.
