As an Outside Machinist, you will play a crucial role in the assembly, installation, modification, and repair of various surface ship machinery and systems. Your primary responsibilities will include setting up, servicing, repairing, aligning, and testing machines that operate on both mechanical and electro-mechanical principles. You will utilize precision measuring tools such as dial calipers, micrometers, and stack height gauges to perform all machining tasks with a high degree of accuracy. Your expertise will be essential in evaluating procedures and recommending changes to enhance the efficiency of setup and production processes. In this position, you will be responsible for performing major overhauls and rebuilding diesel, gas, and air compressors. You will also disassemble, reassemble, and test components of towing winches, mooring winches, capstans, and anchor windlasses, as well as hydraulic and mechanical cranes. A significant part of your role will involve removing and reinstalling generators and executing all types of major alignments on components such as gearboxes and engine shafts. Your ability to rig various props, shafts, generators, pumps, and engines will be critical to your success in this role. Additionally, you will be expected to take readings on props, shafts, and bearings to ensure optimal performance and safety.
