About the position

The Special Education Paraeducator works under the general direction of the building administrator and specific direction of the special education teacher. The primary purpose of this job is to assist assigned student(s) with unique needs in achieving the goals and objectives of the special education program. Responsibilities include providing instruction, behavior management, preparation of materials, and primary care for students, which may involve lifting, toileting, washing, medical intervention, and feeding. The position may be assigned to either elementary or secondary levels.

Responsibilities

  • Assist students with hygiene, including suctioning and personal needs such as lifting, toileting, washing, and feeding.
  • Assist student(s) with transport and/or accompany student(s) in transition activities.
  • Assist with management of high-risk students that are severely emotionally disturbed and/or dangerous.
  • Assist with preparation for and implementation of behavior management techniques, educational and vocational instruction, and vocational placement programs.
  • Assist with IEP preparation at the direction of the classroom teacher.
  • Instruct students incidentally in large or small groups under the direction of the special education teacher.
  • Administer or assist special education teacher with administration of assessment instruments.
  • Prepare materials for use by student, teacher, and parents.
  • Maintain class during special education teacher's absence and supervise students during lunch, recess, and other activities.
  • Use personal computer for data entry and to produce correspondence and reports.
  • Maintain students records and files under the direction of the special education teacher.
  • Assist with profile development for education and vocation planning.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or its recognized equivalent (GED) and two years of study at an institution of higher education (72 quarter hours) or an associate's degree (or higher) or a passing score (455) on a state or local assessment.
  • Two years of successful work experience with special education students and/or equivalent training or certification in the specific area of need for the student(s).
  • Completion of the Fourteen Special Education Core Competencies or obtain within the first 90 days from date of hire.
  • Knowledge of classroom/behavior management techniques, special education terminology, lifting, toileting and feeding techniques, restraint techniques, and verbal de-escalation.
  • Ability to work independently and learn operations, procedures, processes, and equipment usage.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment including handling confidential matters.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and knowledge of proper lifting techniques.
  • Ability to communicate and interact clearly, concisely, courteously, and respectfully with students, parents, guardians, volunteers, teachers, and other staff in a diverse environment.
  • Willingness to learn and implement medical intervention techniques under the direction of a knowledgeable professional.

Nice-to-haves

  • College credit with a major in education, psychology, counseling, social work, or an appropriate medical field.
