About the position

The Park Ranger (Climbing) position at Rocky Mountain National Park involves working in an alpine environment, performing climbing patrols, search and rescue operations, and emergency medical services. The role requires leading traditional climbs and monitoring backcountry conditions to ensure climber safety. This is a temporary position, expected to last for a six-month seasonal period, with an anticipated start date in April-May 2025.

Responsibilities

  • Lead traditional alpine climbs of Grade IV, 5.9, A2 difficulty or higher.
  • Perform backcountry and climbing patrols throughout the East District of Rocky Mountain National Park.
  • Respond to search and rescue operations and provide emergency medical services.
  • Monitor trail and campsite conditions and share information with the public to promote safety.
  • Conduct resource management duties including site cleanup, hazard tree identification, and trail maintenance.

Requirements

  • Must possess a current National Registry EMT-B/EMT certification or higher by the entrance on duty date.
  • At least one year of specialized experience comparable to the GS-05 level in the Federal service, or one full year of graduate-level education related to the position.
  • Experience in performing technical rope rescues in an alpine environment or search and rescue operations in wilderness settings.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in monitoring backcountry/wilderness use and evaluating potential resource damage.
  • Knowledge of law enforcement/investigative procedures in a park or conservation area.
