About the position

The Intake Probation Officer/Youth Specialist - Juvenile Division (Part-Time/Weekends) is a critical role within the Elkhart County Judiciary-Court Services, responsible for overseeing the intake process for juveniles entering the Juvenile Intake Center. This hybrid position requires the officer to work either a 12-hour PM or AM shift on weekends, focusing on conducting intake assessments for juveniles referred by law enforcement. The primary objective is to determine whether a juvenile should be detained in secure detention or released on an alternative basis while awaiting a court hearing. This role emphasizes the importance of providing services that prioritize the welfare of the child and family, ensuring community safety, assisting victims, and promoting a reduction in recidivism through evidence-based practices as directed by the Elkhart County Juvenile Court. In addition to conducting assessments, the Intake Probation Officer/Youth Specialist is responsible for providing direct care supervision and program services to youth placed at the Juvenile Intake Center. This includes ensuring that all facility operations comply with established policies and procedures. The position requires a strong commitment to the principles of juvenile justice and the ability to work effectively with at-risk youth and their families. The officer must also be prepared to engage in ongoing training and certification processes to maintain compliance with state requirements and enhance their professional skills.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct intake assessments on juveniles referred by law enforcement.
  • Determine if juveniles should be detained in secure detention or released on alternatives while awaiting court hearings.
  • Provide direct care supervision and program services to youth at the Juvenile Intake Center.
  • Ensure compliance with facility operations according to policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Must be 21 years of age and an American Citizen.
  • Valid Driver's License required.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Behavioral Science, Social Work, or Criminal Justice.
  • Ability to take/pass Indiana Probation Officer Certification exam within 6 months.
  • Indiana Youth Assessment System certification from IOCS or obtain within 6 months.
  • Must attend an orientation program conducted by Indiana Officer of Court Services within one year of employment.
  • Effective verbal, written, and interviewing skills are essential.
  • Proficiency with Windows and electronic case management systems.
  • Ability to understand Indiana Statutes.
  • Pre-employment background check is required.
