About the position

The Patient Benefit Coordinator I plays a crucial role in assisting patients and their families in accessing financial resources and navigating various assistance programs. This position involves advising patients on their insurance benefits, creating procedure estimates, and negotiating payment arrangements. The coordinator acts as an advocate between different departments and agencies to ensure financial clearance for patient admissions and discharges.

Responsibilities

  • Assist patients and families in accessing financial resources and assistance programs.
  • Communicate and advise patients on insurance benefits and policies.
  • Create procedure estimates and explain financial liabilities to patients.
  • Collect payments and negotiate payment arrangements with patients.
  • Act as an advocate between the billing department, clinic department, and state and federal agencies.
  • Obtain necessary medical evidence and documentation for eligibility determination.
  • Communicate with outside facilities and physician offices to secure financial clearance for admissions and discharges.

Requirements

  • Two years of experience in the insurance industry (private or government sponsored).
  • A Bachelor's degree in Health Care Administration may substitute for required experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous experience with filing Public Assistance Applications (e.g., Medicaid) and/or with DCF.
  • Experience in interviewing and/or collections.
  • Ability to make independent decisions and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to handle difficult situations.
  • Understanding of current regulatory guidelines.
  • Knowledge of healthcare terminology.
  • Superior organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to cultivate partnerships and positive relationships with other providers and community participants.
