About the position

DaVita Kidney Care is seeking a dedicated Patient Care Technician to join our team in Gaylord, MI. This role is pivotal in providing quality care to patients undergoing dialysis treatment. As a Patient Care Technician, you will have the opportunity to support your local community and build meaningful relationships with your patients and teammates. You will monitor, educate, and provide quality care before, during, and after dialysis treatment, making a positive impact in the lives of individuals living with kidney disease and their loved ones. In this position, you will receive comprehensive training and certification, with no prior dialysis experience required. DaVita will provide all necessary training on-site at the dialysis clinic, combining hands-on and classroom learning with certified preceptors. The training period lasts for the first 12 weeks, during which you will receive full-time pay. Upon successful completion of the training, you will be prepared for the Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician (CCHT) licensure, with all associated costs covered by DaVita. The role requires a high school diploma or GED, and candidates must be comfortable working around blood and with needles. We are looking for individuals who are passionate about healthcare and delivering quality patient care. Ideal candidates will possess qualities such as reliability, compassion, collaboration, and attentiveness. While healthcare experience is a plus, it is not mandatory. This position offers a structured schedule of 3 to 4 days a week, including rotating Saturdays, with shifts ranging from 10 to 12 hours per day. Opening shifts may begin as early as 4:00 AM, and closing shifts may end as late as 7:00 PM, with no late night, overnight, or Sunday shifts.

Responsibilities

  • Receive patients into treatment/exam area; record vitals pre- and post-dialysis: weight, temperature, and blood pressure.
  • Measure, monitor, and record vital signs and all other parameters of ESKD patients during treatment; obtain blood samples and culture specimens and prepares for shipment.
  • Set up and monitor dialysis machines and reverse osmosis (RO) water system for correct functioning, respond to visual and audible alarms and make appropriate adjustments before, during and after patient dialysis treatment.
  • Dismantle, clean, and disinfect dialysis machinery and equipment in accordance to DaVita procedures; perform appropriate end of therapy terminal cleaning and disinfection of the dialysis equipment with guidance of nurse and/or preceptor.
  • Collect patient data and report to nurse and/or preceptor as needed related to monitoring and documenting status of vascular accesses.
  • Document patient observations and seek guidance when levels are out of normal range for ESKD patients.
  • Report patient parameters to registered nurse as needed.
  • Initiate dialysis via approved accesses using proper cannulation or central venous catheter techniques in accordance with state, federal and local regulations under guidance of nurse and/or preceptor.
  • Review patient's dialysis prescriptions, note general physical and mental condition of patient through observation and interview, obtain information and/or data to determine compliance to patient's dietary or medication regimen; document observations and review with nurse and/or preceptor.
  • Perform clerical duties as needed and review with nurse and/or preceptor which may include: filing, lab requisitions, scheduling appointments, answering phones, ordering supplies, billing, copying, faxing, data entry and maintaining patient charts.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma (HSD) or GED is required for all hires.

  • Healthcare experience is a plus but NOT required, such as BONENT/Hemodialysis Technician (CCHT) Certifications, Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), Phlebotomy certification, or experience working with patients in a hospital or healthcare facility.
