About the position

Family Health Centers of San Diego (FHCSD) is dedicated to providing exceptional health care services to underserved communities, ensuring that everyone has access to quality health care. As a Patient Service Representative, Float, you will play a crucial role in managing the patient check-in and check-out processes, ensuring that patients receive the best possible service from the moment they arrive until they leave. This position requires a proactive approach to customer service, where you will listen to patients, take ownership of their needs, and work collaboratively with leadership to resolve any concerns that may arise. In this role, you will be responsible for verifying patient identification, updating demographic and insurance information, and ensuring that all necessary forms are completed accurately. You will also handle co-pays and payments, screen for eligibility and financial assistance, and follow established policies for cash handling. Your attention to detail will be essential as you enter patient information into the Electronic Health Record system in a timely manner, confirming and processing referrals and authorizations for specialty services as needed. Additionally, you will be tasked with scheduling appointments, making reminder calls, and responding to billing inquiries. Your ability to multi-task and adapt to a fast-paced environment will be critical, as you will perform various clerical duties such as scanning documents, tracking data, and sorting correspondence. This position may also require you to travel within San Diego County to locations that may not be easily accessible by public transportation, so having reliable transportation is essential.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the patient check-in and check-out process from start to finish.
  • Verify patient identification and update demographic and insurance information.
  • Ensure appropriate forms are provided and completed accurately.
  • Collect specified co-pays and payments from patients per coverage specifications.
  • Screen for eligibility and financial assistance.
  • Follow policies and procedures in collecting and handling cash.
  • Ensure patient information is placed into the Electronic Health Record accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Confirm, request, and process referrals and authorizations for specialty services.
  • Contact patients to schedule appointments and make reminder/recall notifications.
  • Respond to customer billing and payment inquiries as needed.
  • Display a proactive approach to customer service by listening to patients and taking ownership of solutions.
  • Perform general clerical duties such as scanning information and tracking data.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • 1 - 3 years of experience related to administrative/clerical support or customer service required.
  • Ability to work both in a team-based environment and independently.
  • Sound computer literacy to use a computer system for entering information and managing appointments.
  • Knowledge of cashiering functions with the ability to record payments and cash received.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, including interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with diverse patient populations.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and listen well to patients and medical professionals.
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task, be flexible, ensure accuracy, and meet changing priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Medical Assistant certification, C-NA certification, or Medical Terminology course preferred.
  • Experience in a healthcare environment preferred.
  • Possess a basic understanding of medical terminology and procedures preferred.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred.
