About the position

The PCA II position in the Step Down Unit at UMass Memorial Health Care is a part-time role that requires a commitment to providing exceptional patient care in a fast-paced environment. This position is designed for individuals who are passionate about healthcare and are looking to make a difference in the lives of patients. As a PCA II, you will be responsible for assisting patients with daily living activities, ensuring their safety, and communicating effectively with the nursing staff regarding any changes in patient conditions. The role involves working closely with a team of healthcare professionals to maintain a safe and supportive environment for patients recovering from acute medical conditions. In this role, you will participate in the development and maintenance of a safe environment, utilizing interventions to de-escalate patients when necessary. You will assist patients with personal hygiene, ambulation, meals, and nourishment, while also ensuring proper safety techniques are employed during patient handling. The PCA II will be expected to perform patient safety checks and utilize fall prevention strategies as directed. This position requires a high level of interpersonal skills to build relationships with patients, families, and staff, ensuring respectful and culturally appropriate communication at all times. The PCA II role is critical in supporting the nursing staff and enhancing the overall patient experience. You will be expected to demonstrate sensitivity and responsiveness to patients' needs, acting as a source of information and support. Responsibilities

  • Provides clear, timely communication to the RN regarding observations and changes seen in patient/s.
  • Participates in the development and maintenance of a safe environment.
  • Assists patients with daily living activities such as personal hygiene, ambulating, meals, and nourishment.
  • Assists in moving, lifting, positioning, and transporting patients using proper safety techniques.
  • Maintains patient safety by performing patient safety checks and utilizing fall prevention strategies.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a high school education or GED.
  • Current CNA or EMT license or Certified Medical Assistant is preferred.
  • Prior clinical experience or acute care training, or nursing student who has completed at least one clinical rotation, or one year of experience as a PCA I - Inpatient and has completed all unit based competency requirements.
  • Current Basic Life Support or Heart Saver certification.
  • Ability to read, write and communicate in English clearly and concisely.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to gather information and build relationships.
  • Proven problem-solving abilities for routine situations.
  • Ability to remain calm under stress or in emergency situations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a healthcare setting prior to this role.
  • Additional certifications related to patient care.
