About the position

The Per Diem Reference & Instruction Librarian provides tailored instruction in the use of library resources, both one-on-one and in a physical or virtual classroom environment. This position involves providing in-person and virtual reference and research assistance to students of all levels, faculty, staff, and other patrons. The role is part-time and may require working day, evening, or weekend shifts.

Responsibilities

  • Provides Reference services to all patrons of the library by participating in daily reference shifts both in traditional (in person, phone) and virtual (chat) environments.
  • Maintains and submits patron counts and activities to Head of Reference.
  • Develops strong interpersonal and communication skills to assist a diverse population of freshman, graduate students, doctoral students and faculty.
  • Maintains a high level of proficiency in all library databases and resources; learns new technologies or resources and adapts to new methodologies as required.
  • Delivers tailored classes to individuals, small groups and classes by teaching virtual and in-person instruction classes in research techniques, informational literacy, and library resources as scheduled.
  • Modifies instructional techniques in order to choose the best resources appropriate to the level of patron.
  • Coordinates in advance with students or faculty to understand the goals for the session and tailor accordingly.
  • Ensures all required teaching materials e.g., LibGuides, handouts, PowerPoints, search strategies are up-to-date and match the needs of the request.
  • Fulfills other duties as assigned during off-peak times, including but not limited to assisting with collection shifts, applying subject expertise for various projects, and performing library maintenance tasks, e.g., checking for broken links or updating LibGuides.

Requirements

  • Master's degree (From an ALA-accredited Library Science Program. Second master's desired but not required).
  • 1 to 3 years of work-related experience
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Experience with databases
