About The Position

The Pharmacy Clerk plays a crucial role in supporting the daily operations of the Pharmacy Department, ensuring efficient processing of prescriptions and maintaining inventory levels. This position involves direct interaction with patients and pharmacists, handling prescription requests, and managing cash register operations.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate required.
  • Specific knowledge of pharmacy processes and practices, typically learned on the job or through training sessions.
  • Ability to prepare basic correspondence and simple reports in Microsoft Word.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Excel to create tables and simple displays of information.
  • Ability to create basic presentations in Microsoft PowerPoint.
  • Valid CA driver's license required.

Responsibilities

  • Support the daily operations of the Pharmacy Department.
  • Receive new prescriptions and enter information into the Pharmacy Practice Management system.
  • Process labels for new and refill prescriptions.
  • Consult with Pharmacist when warning or Drug Utilization Review (DUR) screen appears during label processing.
  • Handle prescription refill requests.
  • Stock medications and fill supply bins with prescription vials and lids.
  • Answer and direct phone calls and check for messages and faxes.
  • Verify specific patient insurance information.
  • File paperwork and prescriptions under supervision of the Pharmacist-in-charge.
  • Complete and process third-party documents and transmissions, authorizations, and TAR (Treatment Authorization Request).
  • Keep the Pharmacy work areas clean and organized.
  • Deliver medications and prescriptions to other sites as per staff pharmacist and/or Director of Pharmacy instructions.
  • Maintain accurate logs of delivered medications and prescriptions.
  • Operate cash register during patient prescription pick up, process cash and credit card transactions, and obtain patient signatures for insurance log documentation.
  • Inform Pharmacist for prescriptions requiring Pharmacist consultation with the patient.
  • Count and maintain accurate assigned cash in the cash register.
  • Process daily transaction reports and prepare bank deposit.
  • Maintain prescription medication inventory levels.
  • Order medications through software system.
  • Process incoming medication orders to ensure items ordered were shipped and match items invoiced to the pharmacy.
  • Return outdated/expired, damaged, overstock and recalled merchandise for credit and proper disposal.
  • Check expiration dates and rotate or remove stock medications.
  • Assist Pharmacist-in-charge with inventory process.
  • Monitor prescriptions in the wait area and check fill dates.
  • Remove all prescriptions over seven days old or as instructed by PIC.
  • Reverse orders online.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
