Currently recruiting a Pharmacy Technician in Tacoma, WA to coordinate complex clinical operations at a facility that houses individuals detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The Pharmacy Technician is responsible for the provision of a full range of pharmacy services at the assigned facility as well as ensuring compliance with the pharmacy policies and procedures as stated in the ICE Health Service Corps (IHSC) Pharmaceutical Services Directive and Guide. The Pharmacy Technician performs all duties related to preparation and dispensing of medication orders. They provide direct care to patients within their discipline's Scope of Practice and perform functions in accordance with current accepted practice, licensure, certification, credentialing, and granted privileges. The technician may be expected to respond to and coordinate responses to medical emergencies. They read individual prescriptions and determine the name of the drug, strength, and dosage of drugs to be dispensed, correlating instructions on the prescription with pharmacy policy limitations and noting such on the prescription. The technician sets up prescriptions by obtaining the correct drug stock, counting the correct amount of medication, and placing this medication in smaller containers. After the prescription has been filled, all contents and the label are set aside for a final check by a pharmacist. They consult with the Clinical Services Manager or clinical pharmacist directly to clarify any prescription problems, indicating their knowledge and experience to recognize when a physician or pharmacist must be contacted to clarify or change a medication order. The technician is required to use judgment and experience to determine when a pharmacist should be immediately alerted to a therapeutic problem. They set up medications needed for new orders and arrange for a pharmacist to check all preceding steps. The technician also receives supplies, checks receipts against requisitions, and reports any discrepancies found to the pharmacist. They perform computer entry of vouchers or invoices into various program applications for monitoring pharmacy expenditures and generating reports. In addition, the technician determines appropriate stock levels and prepares requisitions accordingly, withdraws outdated drugs, and prepares necessary paperwork for proper action. They package bulk drugs into specific quantities and various size containers, operate various types of equipment such as tablet and capsule counting machines, and record all prepackage information for final checks by a registered pharmacist. The technician is responsible for refilling any missing pharmacy drugs or supply items used during the night and inspects and logs the temperature of all refrigerators containing pharmaceuticals. They conduct orientations for new staff regarding pharmacy policy and practice within the clinic, keep staff informed of changes in protocols, and utilize a personal computer to enter and tabulate data for the monthly workload record. The technician prepares quarterly reports identifying trends in usage and discrepancies, and is familiar with the statistical program designed for this location. They maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to IHSC Policies, Procedures, and accreditation standards as prescribed by ICE/IHSC. The position requires maintaining BLS for Healthcare Providers certification and completing all initial, annual, and ad hoc training as required/assigned. The technician must also adhere to safety, prevention, infection control, quality improvement, and patient education programs as appropriate to their position.
