The position requires you to work Monday through Friday from 7 am to 3:30 pm, with an expectation of one weekend shift per month at any of our New York North Lab locations. As a Phlebotomist, you will utilize appropriate aseptic techniques to draw blood cultures and process Stat specimens according to established Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). You will prepare collection containers with the necessary preservatives for patients and provide instructions for proper specimen collection at home, including urine and stool samples. Additionally, you will be responsible for accurately measuring and recording volumes for 24-hour collections, administering and collecting H. pylori Breath tests, and handling orders for minors with care. Your role will also involve completing paperwork and labeling specimens for the OVH Blood Bank, processing satellite specimens, and ensuring they are delivered to the appropriate department. You will monitor inventory levels in the phlebotomy room and storage area, following protocols for replenishing supplies. In cases where orders need to be deleted or canceled, you will document the reasons thoroughly. You will also be responsible for recalling patients for follow-up procedures or error corrections and documenting these callbacks in the lab logbook. Utilizing the Laboratory Information System (LIS) will be essential for performing job duties, including downtime procedures. Flexibility in your work schedule is necessary to meet emergency staffing needs. To succeed in this role, you must demonstrate competency in adult, pediatric, and infant phlebotomy, as well as performing skin punctures and bleeding times. You will also be responsible for checking in patients at satellite labs, processing lab and office collected specimens for transport, and notifying physicians of critical results. Training new staff in lab policies and procedures will also be part of your responsibilities. This position requires endurance due to continuous typing, prolonged standing, and walking, and you will face environmental risks such as exposure to sharps, latex, and blood-borne pathogens. The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma or GED, with vocational or technical school training preferred. While 0-1 years of experience is required, 2-4 years is preferred. Certification in HeartSaver or Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers is mandatory. Strong communication skills in English, both oral and written, along with excellent customer service and interpersonal skills, are essential. You should be able to work with a high degree of accuracy and have experience with standard office equipment and technology.
