About the position

The Outreach Mobile Phlebotomist at South Shore Health is responsible for performing various phlebotomy procedures, including venipuncture, fingerstick, and heelstick, while ensuring patient comfort and safety. This part-time role involves training interns and colleagues, managing specimen collection and labeling, and performing waived technical testing as required. The position requires effective communication with patients and healthcare staff, prioritizing STAT draws, and maintaining high standards of quality assurance and safety in all procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Perform phlebotomy (venipuncture, fingerstick, and heelstick) according to established procedures.
  • Train interns and colleagues and verify ongoing competency in phlebotomy techniques.
  • Identify patients and properly label specimen tubes using at least two unique identifiers.
  • Determine priority of STAT draws and ensure timely transport of specimens to the lab.
  • Collect nasopharyngeal swabs and perform Covid, FLU, and Strep collections.
  • Perform Electrocardiograms (EKGs) and mobile Holter monitor setups.
  • Manage ambulatory blood pressure monitors and ensure proper data collection.
  • Maintain cleanliness of equipment and department.
  • Function as a receptionist, greet patients, and handle phone inquiries.
  • Train new employees and student interns in phlebotomy duties and departmental procedures.
  • Assist co-workers and communicate with laboratory departments to ensure workflow.
  • Maintain offsite logs and document temperature deviations.
  • Perform order entry and navigate various software platforms accurately.
  • Process specimens and ensure quality assurance under supervision.
  • Perform waived point of care testing and maintain logs related to testing.
  • Foster a culture of safety and adhere to established safety procedures.

Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years of phlebotomy experience (1 year minimum with South Shore Health lab).
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent preferred.
  • Phlebotomy certification preferred.
  • Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program preferred.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with waived technical testing in laboratory settings.
  • Knowledge of special procedures for specimen collection.
