About the position

The Physician Office Medical Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting healthcare providers within the Eastern Connecticut Health Network. This position involves a blend of administrative and clinical responsibilities, ensuring high-quality patient care and efficient medical office operations. Medical Assistants are essential team members who interact with patients, manage medical records, and assist in various medical procedures, all while maintaining a professional and organized work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Greet patients and prepare them for physician examinations according to established protocols.
  • Keep patient charts current and document all sample medications dispensed.
  • Provide oversight to the vaccine program following state guidelines.
  • Check and restock exam rooms with necessary supplies, ensuring they are prepared for the day.
  • Maintain inventory of medical supplies and report needs to the Office Coordinator/Practice Manager.
  • Report malfunctions of medical equipment to the Office Coordinator/Practice Manager.
  • Clean and sterilize equipment and prepare surgical trays as indicated by the physician.
  • Assist the physician/practitioner with office surgical procedures.
  • Perform EKG and Spirometry as ordered.
  • Report lab results to patients and follow through with physician instructions for follow-up or medication changes.
  • Answer pharmacy requests for prescription refills per office protocol.
  • Prepare specimens and paperwork for submission to reference labs as directed by the physician or midlevel.
  • Instruct patients on proper collection of sterile urine specimens.
  • Check all medications monthly and dispose of expired medications appropriately.
  • Obtain precertifications for tests, procedures, treatments, medications, and hospitalizations as needed.
  • Schedule and arrange referrals and outside testing for patients as directed by the physician.
  • Maintain a neat and organized work area and appropriate documentation of compliance with CLIA regulations.
  • Participate in Patient Centered Medical Home Care Team collaborations.
  • May be required to float to other offices and perform other duties as requested by management.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of a Medical Assistant Program or Certification/Registration as a Medical Assistant, or 5+ years of experience as a Medical Assistant in lieu of being a Registered MA, or 5+ years of experience as a Nurse Assistant with at least 1 year of experience.
  • Previous experience working in a medical facility preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong computer and keyboarding skills.

  • Experience in patient interaction.
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions in a medical environment.
