The Plumber Maintenance position at Stanford University's Land, Buildings & Real Estate (LBRE) department is a full-time role focused on performing a variety of plumbing tasks essential for maintaining the university's physical campus. This position is represented by SEIU Local 2007, and the terms of employment are governed by the collective bargaining agreement. The LBRE department is dedicated to supporting the university's academic mission by constructing and maintaining the campus, which spans over 8,180 acres. The Building Engineering Trades within LBRE play a crucial role in maintaining and improving the core systems of the university's architectural structures, providing services that include 24-hour emergency response, routine maintenance, new system design and installation, as well as repairs and alterations to existing systems. In this role, the primary responsibility is to perform skilled plumbing work at the journeyman level, which includes the installation and repair of sewers, water mains, storm drains, grease traps, pipes, fittings, and drainage systems. The Maintenance Plumber will work under the general supervision of the shop lead or supervisor, carrying out tasks independently while selecting the most suitable methods for each job. Responsibilities include assembling, installing, and repairing pipes and fixtures for gas, water, and sanitary lines, as well as performing maintenance on plumbing systems, detecting malfunctions, and responding to emergency calls throughout the campus. The position requires a strong commitment to safety and adherence to university policies and procedures. Candidates for this position should have a combination of education and experience equivalent to four years in an apprenticeship program, along with approximately five years of actual work experience. Strong communication skills, excellent customer service abilities, and a valid California Non-commercial Class C Driver's License are also required. The role involves physical demands such as lifting, bending, and working in various weather conditions, and may require overtime and callbacks. Responsibilities

  • Perform skilled plumbing work at the journeyman level, including installation and repair of sewers, water mains, storm drains, grease traps, pipes, fittings, and drainage systems.
  • Assemble, install, and repair pipes, fittings, and fixtures for gas, water, and sanitary lines, as well as storm drains, toilets, sinks, boilers, and hot water heaters.
  • Cut and thread pipe, bend pipe to required angles, and join pipe using various methods such as flanges, fittings, solder, caulking, welding, and epoxy cement.
  • Perform maintenance on plumbing systems by replacing washers on leaky faucets, mending burst pipes, and opening clogged drains.
  • Detect malfunctions in plumbing systems and make necessary repairs, including shutting down systems as needed.
  • Respond to quick response calls throughout the campus, using good judgment to assess plumbing problems.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on pumps and motors, and may perform minor plumbing-related welding and brazing.
  • Adhere to safety rules and university policies while conducting work.

Requirements

  • Completion of an apprenticeship program or equivalent education and work experience, with approximately five years of actual work experience in plumbing.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a California Non-commercial Class C Driver's License.
  • Experience in a wide variety of plumbing work to occasionally work independently.
