About the position

Under general supervision, the Police Officer (Lateral) performs a wide variety of patrol and related duties aimed at preventing crime, protecting life and property, and enforcing laws, codes, and ordinances. The officer patrols designated areas of the City, conducts surveillance, and engages in investigative work. Responsibilities include controlling traffic flow, enforcing traffic regulations, and providing support to special department crime prevention and enforcement programs. Officers respond to emergencies and calls for service, assist in case preparation, and testify in court as needed. They may also serve in specialized departmental roles as assigned, provide information and assistance to the public, and perform related duties as required. This journey-level classification is responsible for independently executing sworn law enforcement duties in support of the Police Department and public safety. Officers at this level are expected to exercise judgment and initiative in their tasks, receiving only occasional instruction or assistance in new or unusual situations. They are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. The recruitment for this position will remain open until a sufficient number of qualified applications are received, and the filing period may close at any time. A lateral entry opportunity is available for applicants who possess a Basic P.O.S.T. certificate or are eligible for certification at the time of application. Candidates must currently be employed as full-time Police Officers. A signing bonus of $12,500 is offered, with payments distributed at various milestones throughout the probationary period.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a variety of community policing duties to maintain a highly visible presence within the community.
  • Patrol assigned areas to observe and address suspicious or potential criminal activity.
  • Respond to emergency calls for service, including disturbances, burglaries, vehicle accidents, and domestic disputes.
  • Resolve problems and diffuse situations while enforcing state and local laws, ordinances, and codes.
  • Provide information, directions, and assistance to the public in various situations.
  • Observe, monitor, and control routine and unusual traffic situations; issue citations and make arrests as necessary.
  • Prepare reports on arrests made, activities performed, and unusual incidents observed.
  • Secure crime scenes and gather and preserve evidence; conduct interviews with suspects, victims, and witnesses.
  • Conduct traffic studies and surveys; investigate traffic collisions and prepare written documentation.
  • Provide emergency medical assistance to the public when responding to calls for assistance.
  • Assist in the performance of special investigative and crime prevention duties as required.
  • Prepare cases for trial and testify in court; coordinate activities of pre-trial investigation.
  • Attend and participate in meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions.
  • Maintain and ensure the safe working condition of assigned patrol vehicle, firearms, and other equipment.

Requirements

  • Must possess a Basic P.O.S.T. certificate or be eligible for certification at the time of application.
  • Currently employed as a full-time Police Officer.
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License, maintained throughout employment.
  • Graduation from a P.O.S.T. accredited Police Academy.
  • At least one continuous year of sworn general law enforcement experience within the last two years for out-of-state applicants.
  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • Must be a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien eligible for citizenship.
  • Good character and reputation; no felony convictions or numerous minor offenses.
