About the position

The Post Doc Research Associate position in Geomechanics at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) focuses on advancing subsurface science through numerical techniques and algorithms. The role involves analyzing and predicting behaviors of complex geophysical systems, contributing to research that enhances national security and mitigates natural hazards. The position is available for 12 to 24 months, with potential for extension or transition to a permanent role based on performance and funding.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and predict behaviors of complex geophysical systems using numerical techniques and algorithms.
  • Develop an internal and external network of collaborators and project partners.
  • Publish scientific findings in high-impact peer-reviewed journals.
  • Present work at professional conferences.
  • Comply with PNNL policies regarding environmental health and safety, waste management, and protection of intellectual property.

Requirements

  • PhD received within the past five years or within the next eight months from an accredited college or university.
  • Experience in reservoir geomechanics, subsurface stress measurement, Bayesian statistics, hydraulic fracturing mechanics, or earthquake seismology.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and visualization in Python.

Nice-to-haves

  • Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Structural Geology, Geophysics, Petroleum Engineering, Environmental Science or Engineering, or related fields.
  • Demonstrated commitment to data quality and accuracy.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills as evidenced by scientific publications and conference presentations.
  • Experience in mechanics, statistics, geology, and scientific software development.
  • Programming skills in Python, Julia, C++, or FORTRAN, with knowledge of git and software QA/AC.
  • Experience in geomechanics, scientific computing, or seismology.
