About the position

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville is seeking a highly motivated and skilled post-doctoral researcher to join our cutting-edge research team focused on the development of advanced robotic systems for minimally invasive surgery. This position is centered around the goal of bringing high-level automation to surgical procedures by integrating advances in robot design, model-based tissue mechanics, computer vision, and machine learning. The successful candidate will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of researchers and clinicians across four different institutions, working on a state-of-the-art robotic platform that is on the path to FDA clearance. In this role, the primary focus will be on incorporating state-of-the-art real-time tissue mechanics models into the perception framework for an automated robotic system. Additionally, the candidate will engage in the development and experimental evaluation of customized robotic instruments, as well as automated motion-planning and control strategies for various surgical subtasks. The position also entails supervising graduate students, preparing research reports, communicating with research sponsors, and producing high-quality scholarly work for publication in top-tier journals. This post-doctoral position offers an exceptional opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking research at the forefront of robotics and surgical technology. The successful candidate will have access to state-of-the-art equipment and will work in a stimulating and dynamic research environment. Initially, the position is offered for a one-year term, with the possibility of extension up to three years based on performance and funding availability.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the performance of activities to accomplish the objectives of projects funded by ARPA-H and NIH.
  • Lead the development of top-quality publications and patent applications.
  • Collaborate with team members and external partners.
  • Present research findings in conferences, workshops, and academic journals.
  • Regularly present results to research sponsors.
  • Help graduate and undergraduate students develop and overcome obstacles to complete all educational and research objectives.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, or a related field.
  • Expertise in one or more of the following areas: mechanics-based modeling and simulation of elastic materials, robotics, medical imaging, image processing, computer vision, image-guided surgical technology, control systems, and mechatronics, surgical tool design.
  • Proficiency in programming (C/C++, Python, and/or similar languages). Experience with ROS is beneficial.
  • Demonstrated track record of research excellence through publications in reputable conferences and journals.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment and independently drive research projects.
  • Excellent communication skills in both written and spoken English.
