Oak Ridge National Laboratory - Oak Ridge, TN
posted 6 months ago
The Environmental Sciences Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a postdoctoral researcher with expertise in biogeochemistry to contribute to a project focused on the stabilization of mercury (Hg) in contaminated environmental media, including air, soils, sediments, and water. The successful candidate will engage in research aimed at understanding the fate and transformation of mercury under various environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity, both in engineered and natural settings. This role involves designing and executing independent experiments, as well as collaborating with a team in both laboratory and field environments to collect, process, and preserve samples. The researcher will also be responsible for processing and analyzing these samples in the laboratory, summarizing research findings in both oral and written formats, and actively participating in scientific meetings. Publishing research results in open peer-reviewed journals is a key expectation of this position. The postdoctoral researcher will have the opportunity to collaborate with skilled researchers in related fields such as hydrology, geochemistry, environmental microbiology, and ecology, both within ORNL and at partner universities and national laboratories. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in environmental chemistry, (bio)geochemistry, soil science, civil/environmental engineering, or a related discipline. Experience in mercury research, knowledge of materials characterization and analysis methods, and the application of (bio)geochemical models are highly desirable. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, along with excellent oral and written communication abilities, are essential for success in this role. The candidate must be capable of working effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment. It is important to note that applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the application date and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The initial appointment will last up to 24 months, with the possibility of extension based on performance and funding availability.
