About the position

The Postdoctoral Research Associate position at Oak Ridge National Laboratory focuses on conducting experimental research on the reactivity of solid-liquid interfaces, particularly in relation to mineral nucleation and growth from aqueous solutions and interactions with carbon dioxide. The role involves utilizing various experimental techniques and collaborating with a team of researchers to advance scientific understanding in this area.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct independent research using experimental techniques and multi-modal microscopy characterization, developing and optimizing methodologies for mineral analyses.
  • Perform mineral nucleation, growth, and carbonation experiments.
  • Collaborate with ORNL researchers on the design and execution of microscopy and X-ray/neutron scattering experiments and subsequent characterization.
  • Present and report research results and publish scientific findings in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner.

Requirements

  • A PhD in Physical Sciences, such as Geology, Geochemistry, Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering or related disciplines completed within the last 5 years.
  • Experience in wet chemistry.
  • Background in analytical or microscopy techniques (e.g., atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy).

Nice-to-haves

  • Data analyses experience, e.g., using machine learning.
  • Excellent record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
