About the position

The University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate to work in Dr. Tobias Jakobi's laboratory. The focus of the lab is on understanding RNA species and functional networks in the heart, aiming to develop methods for early diagnosis and novel treatment options for heart disease using advanced computational approaches. The role involves algorithm development, data analysis, and contributing to translational cardiovascular research in a collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain detailed records of experiments, analyzing and writing findings.
  • Assist with preparation of grants and manuscripts.
  • Present manuscripts, oral presentations, posters, and research findings at national and international conferences.
  • Plan, coordinate, and conduct scientific research requiring independent evaluation and adaptation of standard scientific techniques.
  • Serve as principal investigator on sub-projects as appropriate.
  • Generate new ideas and projects for development.
  • Design, perform, and oversee experiments and data collection to ensure data integrity and quality control.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret data; prepare statistical and narrative reports and/or graphs as appropriate.
  • Prepare manuscripts for publication and present research results to scientific conferences and other groups.
  • Supervise research technical staff including graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Attend regular group meetings; manage, maintain, and order laboratory equipment and supplies; respond to administrative requests.

Requirements

  • PhD in biomedical science, molecular biology, vascular biology, biochemistry, physiology, or related field.
  • Strong computational skills in programming languages (e.g., Python, R, Perl) and software tools for bioinformatics analysis.
  • Experience with large-scale data analysis (e.g., next-generation sequencing, proteomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics).
  • Proficiency with bioinformatics databases (e.g., Ensembl, NCBI, UniProt) and tools (e.g., BLAST, Bowtie, SAMtools).
  • Knowledge of statistical methods and machine learning techniques for biological data analysis.
  • Experience with high-performance computing environments (e.g., Linux, cloud computing, cluster management).

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in molecular biology.
  • Proven track record of scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Collaboration experience with experimental biologists and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) for presenting research findings and writing grants.
