About the position

The Texas A&M AgriLife Research Center at Weslaco is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to engage in innovative research aimed at developing new technologies for crop improvement. This position is situated within the Mandadi lab, which is dedicated to conducting cutting-edge research that addresses critical agricultural challenges. The center serves as a regional hub for Texas A&M AgriLife activities, focusing on issues pertinent to the local agricultural landscape. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will play a vital role in the conceptualization, development, implementation, and evaluation of research projects and programs. This includes participating in grant proposal development and taking advantage of career development and training opportunities available within the institution. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting both basic and translational research related to plant diseases and crop improvement. This role involves developing new technologies aimed at enhancing stress resilience and improving the quality of food and commodity crops. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will also be tasked with preparing manuscripts for publication and presentations at conferences, as well as writing grant proposals and project reports. Additionally, the candidate will have the opportunity to train and mentor junior lab personnel, contributing to the development of the next generation of researchers in the field. Other related duties may be assigned as necessary to support the lab's objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct translational research and develop new technologies to improve stress resilience and quality of food and commodity crops.
  • Prepare manuscripts for publication and conferences.
  • Write grant proposals and project reports.
  • Train and mentor junior lab personnel.
  • Participate in project/program conceptualization, development, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Engage in career development and training opportunities.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. degree in plant pathology, breeding, crop science, or a related field.
  • Research experience in plant pathology, entomology, crop science, breeding, or biotechnology.
  • Record of high-impact publications, product development, or technology commercialization.
  • Experience with breeding, genome editing, biotechnology, and/or crop improvement tools.
  • Experience with agronomic crops and field production systems.
  • Strong writing, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with diverse cropping systems, pests, and diseases.
  • Working knowledge of CRISPR/genome editing, NGS, and/or the latest genomics-assisted breeding approaches for crop improvement.
