About the position

The Power Plant Electrical Engineer at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is responsible for overseeing all electrical systems within the power plant, including medium voltage, low voltage, and DC systems. This role involves designing, tuning, and modifying control logic to enhance plant reliability and performance, ensuring compliance with National Electric Reliability Council (NERC) cybersecurity requirements. The engineer will analyze electrical transients, manage complex projects, and provide technical recommendations to maintain efficient operations of the cogeneration systems that supply steam and electricity to the campus and UNC Hospitals.

Responsibilities

  • Manage all medium voltage, low voltage, and DC systems within the power plant.
  • Oversee instrumentation and protection of electrical equipment.
  • Design, tune, and modify control logic for plant systems to improve reliability and performance.
  • Analyze plant electrical transients and trips using advanced modeling software.
  • Implement upgrades and design changes to electrical systems and control systems.
  • Ensure compliance with NERC requirements for cybersecurity of plant control systems.
  • Provide technical analysis and recommendations for engineering problems in electrical and control systems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline related to the area of assignment or equivalent training and experience.
  • Expert knowledge of engineering concepts, practices, and theories in electrical and control systems.
  • Ability to evaluate, approve, and manage complex projects within budget and schedule.
  • Strong communication skills to convey complex technical concepts clearly and concisely.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • Five years of experience in heavy industrial electrical and control systems.
  • Experience supervising engineers and engineering technicians.
  • Professional Engineering Certification - Licensed in NC.
