About the position

The Principal Agile Coach at Mayo Clinic will play a pivotal role in transforming the organization into a high-performing, agile environment. This position involves working closely with scrum leads, teams, and senior leadership to facilitate learning and develop Agile best practices across the organization. The Principal Agile Coach will be responsible for communicating agile principles, scrum practices, and the overall operating model, ensuring that these concepts are understood and implemented effectively throughout the organization. This role requires a champion for using metrics and other objective measures to assess team performance and promote a culture of continuous improvement. In this leadership position, the Principal Agile Coach will lead the Scrum Leaders Community of Practice, fostering cross-team collaboration and sharing of best practices. The successful candidate will be tasked with navigating organizational change while developing Agile leadership capabilities to achieve sustained results. They will need to possess a strong orientation toward action and a curiosity to explore innovative solutions to challenges. The role is designed for someone who is not only knowledgeable about Agile methodologies but also passionate about implementing them in a way that enhances efficiency and quality within the organization. Specific responsibilities include leading individuals and teams in designing and executing their own plans for expanding Agile practices, managing Agile coaching engagements with department leaders, and supporting Value Stream and Product Workstream planning across teams. The Principal Agile Coach will also develop Enterprise Agile Standards of Practices and an Agile Playbook, conduct executive-level reporting on transformation activities, and ensure alignment of Agile strategy with organizational goals. Responsibilities

  • Lead individuals, teams, and organizations to design and execute their own plan for expanding agile practices.
  • Set up and manage Agile Coaching engagements with department leaders and managers.
  • Support Value Stream and Product Workstream planning and facilitation across teams and departments.
  • Develop Enterprise Agile Standards of Practices and an Agile Playbook.
  • Provide enterprise-level coaching and mentoring from Agile teams to senior leaders to promote understanding of agile principles and practices.
  • Conduct routine executive-level reporting on transformation activities and agile maturity of the entire department.
  • Develop, maintain, and continuously improve common Agile methodologies, policies, and practices focused on individuals and interactions over processes and tools.
  • Lead the non-managed Scrum Leaders Community of Practice to encourage cross-team collaboration.
  • Ensure alignment of Agile strategy with organizational strategy and execution.
  • Develop standards and metrics for success through partnerships with product teams.
  • Manage Agile Coach staff assignments on initiative engagements, when applicable.
  • Collaborate with leadership to create a roadmap for sustaining agility as the organization evolves.
  • Serve as a mentor to other agile coaches to aid in their career growth and progression.
  • Participate in the hiring and onboarding of new agile coaches.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree OR 4 additional years of related experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted in lieu of a degree.
  • 8+ years of experience performing in multiple Agile roles, including 4+ years of experience as an Agile Coach (not Scrum Leader).
  • Strong business acumen and advanced knowledge of the software development lifecycle and methodologies.
  • Advanced understanding of Agile risk management practices and Lean-Agile methodologies, practices, and tools (i.e. Azure DevOps/Aha!).
  • Track record of leadership in Agile transformation in large organizations.
  • Proven knowledge of the application of Agile at scale and demonstrated ability to coach and lead cultural and organizational change.
  • Previous experience in Product Ownership or as a Scrum Leader.
  • Knowledge and experience in two or more Agile or Lean frameworks - Scrum, Kanban, Scrumban, Feature Driven Development, Lean, Lean Six Sigma, Extreme Programming.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence change at both the leadership and team levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead by example and model expected behaviors.

Nice-to-haves

  • SPC 5.0 or above - Scaled Agile Program Consultant.
  • PMP or PgMP Certified.
  • Agile Certification - CSM, CPSO, ICP, PMI-ACP, or PSM.
