Abiomed is recruiting for a Principal Controls & Instrumentation Engineer, located in Danvers, MA. Abiomed's Global Automation Engineering Group showcases innovative technical masters, world-class technologies and solutions that 'power' the quality and performance of Abiomed's heart pumps! The Principal Controls & Instrumentation Engineer provides engineering and technical resource expertise to improve the group's contribution to company performance. This role serves as one of the leaders of the technical community, working across all technical functions, both internally and externally, developing new technologies and processes for existing and future product production. This role is responsible for designing, building, and implementing the most efficient manufacturing controls hardware and software to meet the automation needs of a very dynamic and technically complicated business. Abiomed, a division of J&J Medical Device, is an innovative medical device company focused on recovering hearts and saving lives! Through its Impella pump systems, Abiomed seeks to grow its production capabilities, automation capabilities, and control systems. Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, specify, and implement automation controls and instrumentation for assembly and packaging processes.
  • Lead continuous improvement efforts, technology transfers, and new product development in support of business objectives.
  • Design and implement complex Machine Vision, Laser, and Measurement Systems for quality control on assembly equipment.
  • Develop, test, and execute PLC/SCADA application software for manufacturing processes, equipment, and systems.
  • Create or coordinate hardware and software design solutions for novel or complex problems; integrate regulatory and operational needs, and assess cost benefit.

Requirements

  • Proven experience in controls and instrumentation engineering, particularly in a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong knowledge of PLC/SCADA systems and application software development.
  • Experience with Machine Vision, Laser, and Measurement Systems.
  • Ability to lead technical projects and collaborate across multiple functions.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to assess cost-benefit analyses.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in the medical device industry or similar regulated environments.
  • Familiarity with automation technologies and their application in manufacturing processes.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements related to medical device manufacturing.
