About the position

Tandem Diabetes Care creates new possibilities for people living with diabetes, their loved ones, and their healthcare providers through a positively different experience. We'd love for you to team up with us to 'innovate every day,' put 'people first,' and take a 'no-shortcuts' approach that has propelled us to become a leader in the diabetes technology industry. The Principal Systems Engineer leads comprehensive architectural analysis and documentation of integrated systems while establishing standardized reliability metrics across the organization. This technical leader applies deep expertise in resolving complex system failures and conducting thorough root cause analyses to enhance overall resilience. The position requires subject matter expertise in industry standards and protocols while mentoring junior engineers. The role involves hands-on contribution to the development and implementation of new test methodologies and tools that measure and ensure software reliability at scale.

Responsibilities

  • Lead comprehensive analysis and documentation of the end-to-end architecture of integrated systems, identifying gaps and opportunities for enhancement.
  • Define and standardize key system reliability metrics, collaborating cross-functionally to optimize performance and reliability of software systems at scale.
  • Identify, analyze, and resolve system-level failures, conducting root cause analyses and recommending improvements for resilience.
  • Serve as subject matter expert on industry standards and protocols relevant to system integration (e.g., MQTT, LwM2M).
  • Mentor and guide junior engineers and teams.
  • Hands-on involvement in reviewing, designing, and implementing new test methods and tools to measure and ensure software reliability.
  • Ensures compliance with company policies, including Privacy/HIPAA, and other legal and regulatory requirements.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience designing and troubleshooting distributed systems.
  • Extensive experience in systems engineering, particularly focused on systems reliability and integration.
  • Experience defining and measuring reliability metrics, with knowledge of relevant industry standards (e.g., MQTT, LwM2M, BLE, RF).
  • Strong knowledge of regulatory frameworks (ISO 13485, HIPAA, GDPR, etc.).
  • Experience with automated test environments and reliability engineering methodologies, preferred.
  • Proficiency in implementing and debugging communication protocols across multi-vendor environments.
  • Experience developing automated failure testing frameworks that can simulate and detect cascading system failures before production deployment.
  • Track record of leading post-mortem analyses that resulted in specific architectural improvements (e.g., implementing circuit breaker patterns, enhancing retry mechanisms).
  • Ability to translate complex technical concepts into actionable guidance for engineering teams.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, or related technical field required.
  • Master's degree or advanced professional certifications in Systems Engineering or related field, strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with modern software development practices, Agile methodologies, and DevOps integration, preferred.

Benefits

  • Starting base pay range of $170,000 - $200,000 annually.
  • Competitive compensation package that includes bonus, equity, and a robust benefits package.
  • Health care benefits such as medical, dental, vision, health savings accounts and flexible saving accounts.
  • 11 paid holidays per year.
  • A minimum of 20 days of paid time off (starting in year 1).
  • Access to a 401k plan with company match.
